Ziberi to Zalbadika: September 2, 2014

Well, I made it through the night. The Hospitalier moved the guy above me to another room but insisted the bed was ok.  I quickly moved to the top bunk.  I told Angie that perhaps the Camino should be called El-Dieo.  That might also have been born of the shrines we passed today of people who have died on the Camino.  :)

Today was easier, with fewer ups and downs. However, our bodies are very sore and tired. We walked mostly along a river today. We were also sustained by eating more blackberries. We stopped at a little grocery store and purchased yogurt, bread, cheese, and a wonderful cup of coffee. Spain really does know how to make coffee! The yogurt was the best yogurt we have ever eaten. It tasted like peaches.

We walked on until we came to a medieval bridge that took us into a little, tiny town. There, we had something to drink and rested our bodies. It was nearly noon, but we were ready to stop. The guidebook is confusing. Angie and I argued about whether to go left or right and where the next place to stay was located. Finally, with help from another pilgrim, we decided to turn left.

Walking on another 5 km, we came to a monastery that is run by nuns. To get to the monastery, we had to climb a steep hill. By the time we got to the top, I was huffing and puffing, and Angie reminded me to rest when I needed to do so I don't have a heart attack. I thought that was good advice!  We were rewarded with a lovely greeting from one of the nuns and a wonderful place to stay overlooking the valley. That night, we had the opportunity to attend the pilgrim's mass, to have dinner with all the other pilgrims, and to have special prayers for the pilgrims before retiring for the night.  It was like finding a sanctuary. The people were lovely and we made new friends. The cost for dinner, a bit to eat for breakfast, and a place to stay was only that of a donation! Our spirits were lightened.

Some highlights of our day included ringing the bell in the tower, making friends from Ireland and Canada, and hearing the loudest snoring we have ever heard!
