Ages to Burgos: September 15, 2014: Day 16
We woke up this morning to thunder, lightening and heavy rain. We decided we would wait a little for the rain to move over before leaving however most of the pilgrims left before 7. We had to be out of the alberque by 8. We left a few minutes before and has a breakfast of tortilla ( baked egg and potato dish) coffee con leche and orange juice. We left about 8:30 in a light rain.
After a couple miles we began an uphill climb that was quite a workout. When reaching the top we found a clearing with a pile of stones with pilgrim prayers and a labyrinth made by other pilgrims. I found it very meaningful. It came me a place to stop and focus on the purpose of my walk and felt the power of all the other perigrinos who have made this walk before me. They say that there are about 200,000 pilgrims a year now days, however in the Middle Ages even more pilgrims made this walk each year. It is a very spiritual place.
As we made our way down the hill we could see across the valley with lots of wheat fields. We stopped for something to drink at a small village and met 2 of our Irish lady friends. They had sent their bags ahead for the past couple days and said they could not believe how much better their hips and feet felt. Sadly we learned that they will end their pilgrimage in Burgos. We have enjoyed our little visits with them. They reminded us to take good care of ourselves and blessed us on our way.
Coming into Burgos was so much like walking into Boise that it was like we had been transported home. So strange. But the city is much different. There is much history here with statues, museums and a magnificent cathedral. We will attend the pilgrims mass tonight at the cathedral and tour it tomorrow.
We have decided to stay at a hotel tonight in the old part of the city. We are both so looking forward to a long hot bath, no snoring and no one getting up in the wee hours of the morning. We are playing with staying an extra day because there is so much to see. It would also be wonderful to sleep in a little longer. Also we get to have breakfast here at the hotel. Whoohoo! Life is good.
